Designed as the lexical companion to Wikipedia, the encyclopaedia project, Wiktionary has grown beyond a standard dictionary and now includes a thesaurus, a rhyme guide, phrase books, language statistics and extensive appendices. We aim to include not only the definition of a word, but also enough information to really understand it. Thus etymologies, pronunciations, sample quotations, synonyms, antonyms and translations are included. Landscape art is a term that covers the depiction of natural scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and forests, and especially art where the main subject is a wide view, with its elements arranged into a coherent composition. In other works landscape backgrounds for figures can still form an important part of the work. Sky is almost always included in the view, and weather is often an element of the composition. Detailed landscapes as a distinct subject are not found in all artistic traditions, and develop when there is already a sophisticated tradition of representing other subjects. The two main traditions spring from Western painting and Chinese art, going back well over a thousand years in both cases. Landscape photography has been very important since the 19th century, and is covered by its own article. The word landscape is from the Dutch, landschap originally meaning a patch of cultivated ground, and then an image. The word entered the English language at the start of the 17th century, purely as a term for works of art; it was not used to describe real vistas before 1725. From Wikipedia under the

Answered by lToaster - Sun Sep 13 10:22:02 2009 What are the three main movements in contemporary art?
Q. I'm a bit confused and cant work out the three from anti-art, environmental, digital photography, landscape, concept, etc etc etc. Can anyone give me 3 precise headings and good examples of artists to study under each. Thanks. Thanks pin head but really that's the era of modern art as opposed to contemporary. I'm looking at art from the 1990's onwards...the Saatchi sensation crew etc, tracey emin, rachel whitelaw, andy goldsworthy etc etc. I'm just having trouble categorising them into three main movements. Thanks again though Sorry that should have read ^ Rachel Whiteread, head mashed! Thanks to those of you who answered, got it now, process-led, traditional aesthetics and anti-art, appatrently.
